Orange is the New Black is a Netflix series that aired on July of 2013. The series was created by acclaimed writer and show-runner Jenji Kohan, whose previous television experience includes Sex in the City and Weeds. The program is based on the true story of Piper Kerman, whose memoir is titled, Orange is the New Black: My Year in a Woman’s Prison.
The series follows the life of protagonist Piper Chapman (Taylor Schilling), a woman who is sentenced to 15 months in federal prison for transporting a suitcase full of drug money ten years earlier with her former international drug smuggling girlfriend, Alex Vause (Laura Prepon). Once in prison, Piper crosses paths with her former flame. The series focuses on Piper and Alex re-evaluating their relationship and on the lives of their fellow female inmates.
Orange is the New Black has developed a large, dedicated fan base and has received a positive response from critics. The show is praised for its diverse ensemble, its innovation in providing greater and more dynamic roles for women, its accuracy in depicting the nuances of life in prison, and its effective tackling of difficult themes and subject matter. David Wiegand of The San Francisco Chronicle writes, “There is an abiding feeling for character and authenticity that helps elevate Orange Is the New Black to a new definition of television excellence.” Matt Roush, of TV Guide echoes these notions, stating, “Netflix finally achieves its eureka moment with a terrifically entertaining piece of original programming that’s truly and bracingly original.”
